Vol. 492 No. 2

Written Answers. - Wheelchair Accessible Taxis.

Alan M. Dukes

Question:

81 Mr. Dukes asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the fact that cars in the new phase of wheelchair accessible taxis have been converted to run on clean fuel; and if he will direct that they pay reduced vehicle registration tax. [10501/98]

The question of using vehicles which run on so called cleaner fuel, as wheelchair accessible taxis, is a matter for providers of such vehicles With regard to the vehicle registration tax and VAT for which I have responsibility, I would like to inform the Deputy that I have no plans to reduce such taxes on taxis that may be running on clean fuel. Such a move would lead to pressure for the extension of the relief, on competitive grounds, to all taxis and hackneys and would be impossible to ringfence.
