Ivor Callely

Question:

101 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance further to Parliamentary Question No. 49 of 3 March 1998, the progress, if any, regarding the issue of a primary medical certificate subject to a review clause under the Disabled Drivers and Disabled Passengers (Tax Concessions) Regulations, 1994; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Question:

112 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to difficulties been experienced by directors of community care and medical officers of health with regard to the issue of a primary medical certificate, for presentation to the Revenue Commissioners under the Disabled Drivers and Disabled Passengers (Tax Concessions) Regulations, 1994; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13872/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 101 and 112 together.

I understand the Deputy's questions relate to the medical eligibility criteria on which the issuing of the primary medical certificates is based. These criteria, which for obvious reasons are tightly drawn, are laid down in the regulations. They were last reviewed in 1994 and it is intended that a further review will take place shortly in consultation with other relevant Ministers.

The technical review of the disabled drivers scheme by the Revenue Commissioners to which I alluded in my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 49 on 3 March 1998 is now at an advanced stage and will be submitted to my Department shortly.
