Vol. 492 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

293 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will provide additional personnel to the Garda station in Douglas, County Cork, in view of the ever increasing population in the area. [14220/98]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that the strength of Douglas Garda Station at present and for the past three years is as follows:—

Date

Number of Gardaí (all ranks)

31-12-1995

17

31-12-1996

18

31-12-1997

19

31-05-1998

19

The Garda authorities have informed me they are satisfied that the current personnel strength of Douglas Garda Station is adequate to meet the present policing needs of the area. However, they have assured me the situation will be kept under review, and when additional personnel become available for allocation the needs of the Douglas sub-district will be fully considered in the overall context of the needs of other Garda districts throughout the country.
