Vol. 492 No. 6

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

Michael Ferris

Question:

41 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands her views on the raising of awareness and appreciation of architecture and its importance as an integral part of our culture; and the measures, if any, she proposes to take in this regard. [14532/98]

I am strongly committed to the importance of raising awareness and appreciation of architecture as a central part of our culture and as, perhaps, the most public of all the art forms.

As Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, I have responsibility for the co-ordination of the development of specific policy proposals and actions in relation to architecture. As I have previously advised this House, I have established an interdepartmental working group to advance these matters. The raising of awareness and appreciation of architecture is essential to the realisation of the objectives in that statement and is a central issue being addressed by the working group.
