Vol. 492 No. 7

Written Answers. - Teaching Posts.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

365 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the extent, if any, to which he has reviewed the need for remedial teachers in County Kildare in both urban and rural settings; the proposals, if any, he has to meet the requirements as set out by the various school authorities at second level in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15206/98]

Ex-quota remedial posts are allocated to second level schools on the basis of priority of need and having regard to existing provision within schools and the recommendations of my Department's psychological service.

I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that there are many competing demands for increased funding in all sectors of education. These demands are considered within the overall budgetary constraints. The position of the schools in County Kildare will be kept under review and will be considered when it is possible to allocate additional ex-quota remedial posts.
