Vol. 492 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Facilities.

Question:

41 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide school facilities during the summer months for extra curricular activities for school pupils on holidays; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14816/98]

I am aware that the management authorities of many schools already make their premises available for community and other uses.

The use of schools outside of normal school time is a matter for the management authority of the school. The management authority must of course ensure that adequate insurance cover applies and that the school property is safeguarded.

I am very much in favour of the use of school premises for community purposes outside of normal school time and I would strongly urge that school buildings provided by way of State aid should be readily available for such use.
