Vol. 492 No. 7

Written Answers. - Multi-denominational Schools.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

96 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the difficulties faced by Educate Together schools for which his Department's rent subsidy is only 50 per cent; if he will consider raising the level to 75 per cent which is enjoyed by Gaelscoileanna; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14986/98]

The position is that, generally, the level of rental subsidy paid to multi-denominational schools in temporary accommodation is 50 per cent of the rental cost.

A comprehensive review of matters relating to the recognition and resourcing of primary schools, including the question of rental grant-aid, is being carried out at present by the Commission on School Accommodation Needs. Educate Together, as the umbrella group for multi-denominational schools, is represented on the commission's steering group and will play an important part in the formulation of the group's recommendations.

I intend to review current policy in relation to rental refunds when the commission's report becomes available.
