Vol. 493 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Pat Carey

Question:

193 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will consider, as a measure to improve the quality of teaching in second level schools, the phased reduction in the appointment ratio to 15 to 1 in order that class sizes can be reduced below the current level of 30, the phased introduction of a deputy principal in addition to other teaching staff to all schools, the phased introduction of remedial teacher posts in addition to other teaching staff in all schools and the phased introduction of guidance counsellor posts in addition to other teaching staff in all schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15524/98]

It is my intention to improve the staffing position in second level schools as resources permit. The current standard pupil teacher ratio at second level is 19:1. However, when all pupils and teaching posts are taken into account, the actual pupil teacher ratio is currently of the order of 16:1.
