Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tobacco Advertising.

Nora Owen

Question:

255 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Health and Children when he will introduce legislation to give effect to the EU Directive banning tobacco advertising; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15752/98]

Ireland has long supported a ban on tobacco advertising and sponsorship at EU level and the adoption of the directive by the European Parliament and Council is therefore welcomed. With regard to implementation my Department is examining the matter with a view to having an effective implementation strategy. Shortly after my appointment I established a policy review group to carry out a fundamental review of tobacco and health. When this review is completed I will look at the implementation strategy in the context of the overall recommendations made by the group.
