Vol. 493 No. 4

Written Answers. - Driving Licences.

Noel Ahern

Question:

121 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the discrimination exercised in relation to driving licence fees for the elderly which are assessed at double the rate per year than for the rest of society; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16451/98]

The fee for a driving licence is an excise duty, any change in which would be formally a matter for the Minister for Finance. In view of representations which have been made, my Department is examining the current fee structure in its application to older age groups and will transmit its advice to the Department of Finance as soon as possible.
