Vol. 493 No. 4

Written Answers. - Litter Pollution.

Seán Power

Question:

127 Mr. Power asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on the increase in litter; if he will launch a major anti-litter campaign; if he will consider an initiative whereby the corporate sector will get involved in keeping our streets, roads and motorways clean; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16383/98]

I am seriously concerned about the continuing, widespread incidence of litter pollution and am determined that local authorities rigorously enforce the provisions of the Litter Pollution Act, 1997, to deal with the problem. Under that Act, local authorities are responsible, among other things, for ensuring that, as far as practicable, public roads are kept free of litter. On 8 June 1998, I announced a series of measures as part of an anti-litter programme to support strengthened local authority action on litter this year. Details of these measures are set out in the reply to Questions Nos. 17 and 61 of 11 June 1998.
