Vol. 493 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Recognition.

Seán Haughey

Question:

194 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will give permanent recognition to a Gaelscoil (details supplied) in Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16568/98]

The Gaelscoil referred to by the Deputy was established in September 1996 with temporary recognition from my Department. Normally, the granting of permanent recognition does not arise for a school of this type until it has been in operation for a number of years. This is to enable the school to demonstrate over a period of time that it has a viable future and that it is being conducted in accordance with the Rules of National Schools.

The question of permanent recognition for this school will be finalised by the planning section of my Department as soon as the new enrolments become available at the beginning of the next school year. The school authorities will be notified of the outcome at the earliest possible opportunity thereafter.
