42 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has considered Ireland's continuing participation in a force similar in size and mandate to the existing SFOR; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12995/98]
On 15 June 1998 the UN Security Council extended the mandate of the existing SFOR for a further planned period of 12 months. The continued presence of the Irish contingent in SFOR, and the financial responsibilities which arise from Irish participation, were approved by the Dáil through a motion adopted on 18 June, following a Government decision of 16 June in favour of Ireland's continued participation in SFOR.
SFOR continues to play an indispensable role in preserving peace and contributing to a climate of stability in which the political and democratic process must be pursued. I attach great importance to Ireland's continuing participation in SFOR. I congratulate the men and women of the Irish SFOR contingent for the fine work they have done, and continue to do, in the cause of peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
