Vol. 493 No. 5

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Relations.

Ivor Callely

Question:

94 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the diplomatic relationship between Ireland and Hong Kong; the likely developments in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16599/98]

Since July 1997 Hong Kong has become an integral part of the People's Republic of China. Since diplomatic relations are established between sovereign states, the question of establishing relations with Hong Kong does not arise. Ireland has an Honorary Consul in Hong Kong who provides consular services for Irish citizens in that area.
