Vol. 494 No. 4

Written Answers. - Agricultural Schemes.

Willie Penrose

Question:

226 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the steps, if any, he will take to increase the sheep headage in view of the difficulties experienced by hill sheep farmers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18725/98]

I have obtained the Government's agreement to make available a sum of £10 million to deal with winter fodder difficulties on certain farms. The measure will be geared towards farms in the worst affected areas. My primary aim is to relieve hardship on the individual farms most affected. The details of the scheme will be finalised as a matter of urgency so that the funds made available can be paid out as quickly as possible. Commission approval is required and this will be sought as a matter of urgency.

I have also sought Commission approval to continue the sheep headage top-up of £1 on eligible mountain ewes and £2 on hogget ewes which will amount to an additional £2.75 million in 1998 for sheep farmers in the disadvantaged areas.
