Vol. 495 No. 1

Written Answers. - Employment of Persons with Disabilities.

Richard Bruton

Question:

236 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the extent to which the Civil Service is meeting the employment target of 3 per cent in relation to persons with disabilities; and whether the number and percentage in respect of the Civil Service (details supplied) have improved in the past five years. [19657/98]

As of 1 April 1998, there were 777 people with disabilities, representing 2.8 per cent of staff employed in the Civil Service, the only area of the public service for which I have direct responsibility. A tabular statement listing the percentage of people employed in the Civil Service each year since 1993 follows. As I have already indicated in a reply to an earlier question on the matter, the fact that the figure has dropped below the target of 3 per cent is a cause of concern and the matter is being kept under review. The Heads of each Government Department and Office are fully aware of the importance of reaching and maintaining the 3 per cent quota. My officials are currently in the process of gathering the figures for 1 October 1998.
