Vol. 495 No. 1

Written Answers. - Services for People with Disability.

Question:

266 Mr. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to introduce a Disabilities Act to set out the rights of access of persons with a disability to services and to impose an obligation on service providers to continually improve the accessibility of services to persons with a disability.

The report of the Commission on the Status of People with Disabilities, A Strategy for Equality, recommends the introduction of a disabilities Act setting out the rights of people with disabilities and means of redress for those whose rights are denied. The introduction of such legislation would be a matter for my colleague, Deputy John O'Donoghue, Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform. I have no plans to introduce a disabilities Bill in respect of the provision of health services for people with disabilities.
