Vol. 495 No. 1

Written Answers. - Housing Grants.

Liam Aylward

Question:

308 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will instruct the local authorities to include persons who have Down's syndrome in the category of disabled persons eligible for grant aid under the disabled persons grant scheme. [19316/98]

Under the Housing (Disabled Persons and Essential Repairs Grants) Regulations, 1993, a local authority may pay a disabled persons grant in respect of works of adaptation to a house that, in the opinion of the authority, are reasonably necessary for the purpose of rendering a house more suitable for the disabled person. Subject to the regulations, it is a matter for local authorities in the circumstances of individual cases to determine eligibility for a grant and the type of works for which a grant may be given.
