Vol. 495 No. 1

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Michael Ring

Question:

343 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when social welfare payments will be reinstated for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo. [19454/98]

To qualify for an unemployment payment a person must be available for and genuinely seeking work. Reviews of recipients' efforts to find work are carried out on an ongoing basis.

In the context of a recent review of his entitlements, the person concerned was asked to provide details of his efforts to find work. Based on his response a deciding officer disallowed his claim from 9 September 1998, on the grounds that he was not available for and not genuinely seeking work.

It is open to the person concerned, if he so desires, to appeal this decision to the independent social welfare appeals office. A form for this purpose has been issued to him.

John Browne

Question:

344 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the reason a person (details supplied) in County Wexford has been denied social welfare payments in view of the fact that he has no income and is married with a young family; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19455/98]

To qualify for an unemployment assistance payment a person must show inter alia, that his-her means are within the prescribed limits set out in legislation. The person concerned was disallowed unemployment assistance from 28 August 1996 because he failed to provide details of his means. A renewed application dated 13 June 1997 was also disallowed on the same grounds. Both decisions were upheld by the independent social welfare appeals office.

His latest application for unemployment assistance was disallowed on 22 July 1998 on the grounds that he failed to disclose details of his means. He was advised of this decision and of his right of appeal. No appeal was received.
