Vol. 495 No. 1

Written Answers. - Youthreach Programme.

Michael Ferris

Question:

398 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to fund the VTOS Youthreach Programme beyond 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19329/98]

These programmes are currently aided by the European Social Fund. While initial negotiations have started regarding the next round of EU funding for Ireland for 2000-06, it is not possible at this stage to state which programmes will be ESF aided in the future. It will, of course, be essential to undertake a rigorous review of the continued need for the cope and extent of all such programmes as part of the preparation for the National Development Plan. However, I am committed to the continued funding of VTOS and Youthreach programmes for as long as they are required to meet the needs of early school leavers and unemployed adults.
