Vol. 495 No. 1

Written Answers. - Private Rented Accommodation.

Liz McManus

Question:

57 Ms McManus asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to assist tenants in private rented accommodation in view of the evidence produced by organisations like Threshold that huge increases in rents were forcing tenants out; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19354/98]

Tenants of private rented accommodation whose means are not sufficient to meet their needs, including their rent payments, may qualify for assistance by way of rent supplementation under the supplementary welfare allowance scheme (SWA) if they meet the conditions of the scheme. The SWA is administered by health boards under the overall direction and control of the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs which specifies the terms and eligibility conditions for rent supplementation.
