88 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of remedial teachers allocated to each secondary school in County Kildare; the number of pupils enrolled in each school; the number of pupils assessed as requiring the assistance of a remedial teacher in each school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The data requested by the Deputy in relation to the number of ex-quota remedial teachers is given in the following table.

The following number of students were assessed by the Department of Education and Science psychological service as requiring the assistance of a remedial teacher in the County Kildare post-primary schools listed, during the school year 1997/98.

There were no students assessed as requiring the assistance of a remedial teacher in the other post-primary schools in County Kildare during 1997-98. The above figures do not include students who may have been assessed by other services and for whom information would not be available to the Department.

I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that there are many competing demands for increased funding in all sectors of education. These demands are considered within the overall budgetary constraints.

I can assure the Deputy that the position of the schools in County Kildare will be kept under review and will be considered when next it is possible to allocate additional ex-quota remedial posts.
