97 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sanction a fifth teaching position at St Brigid's national school, Kil-oughter, Redhills, County Cavan, in view of the current enrolment of 125 pupils; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19862/98]
As the Deputy will be aware, the staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous year. The enrolment at St. Brigid's national school on 30 September 1997 was 114 pupils. This enrolment warrants a staffing of a principal and three teachers for the 1998-99 school year.
This arrangement may be deviated from if a school is in breach of maximum class sizes guidelines. However, available evidence suggests that the school's current enrolment of 125 pupils can be organised within these guidelines. In the circumstances, I regret that there is no basis for sanctioning an additional teaching post to the school at this time.

The enrolment at Castletara national school on 30 September 1997 was 53 pupils. This enrolment warrants a staffing of a principal and one assistant teacher for the 1998-99 school year.

Available evidence suggests that the school's current enrolment can be organised within these guidelines. In the circumstances, I regret that there is no basis for sanctioning an additional teaching post to the school at this time.
