Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Deflector Systems.

Michael Ring

Question:

103 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the progress, if any, she has made in liaising with the Director of Telecommunications Regulation since taking up office in relation to the community deflector systems; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20386/98]

I have met with the Director of Telecommunications Regulation on a number of occasions to discuss the community deflector systems issue, as well as other issues.

The initiative for making proposals concerning the resolution of the community deflector systems problem rests solely with the director in her capacity as independent regulator of the sector and my understanding, at present, is that the director will not be in a position to deal with this issue until the end of the year.

I can confirm that, once I have received such proposals, I plan to have further discussions with the director on the matter.

Question:

104 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the estimated timeframe within which the Director of Telecommunications Regulation will have the community deflector systems problem resolved; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20387/98]

The initiative for making any proposals in this regard and the timeframe for this is solely a matter for the Director of Telecommunications Regulation in accordance with her responsibilities as independent regulator of the sector and in line with regulations made under the Wireless Telegraphy Acts. I have not received any proposals to date from the director in this regard although I understand that she hopes to be able to address the issue before the end of the year.
