Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

337 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of junior liaison officers currently deployed; the ratio of these officers to the population; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20550/98]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda personnel and they inform me that there are 83 juvenile liaison officers in total. In addition, there are six supervising sergeants in Dublin, one in Cork and one in Limerick. The national juvenile office is staffed by a superintendent (Director), an inspector and two sergeants. The total number of Garda personnel involved directly in the operation of the Garda juvenile diversion programme is 95. If the Deputy requires it, a breakdown of allocation by division can be requested and will be issued to him in due course.

The ratio of Garda personnel directly involved in the operation of the Garda juvenile diversion programme to the general population is 1:38,169. The ratio of Garda personnel directly involved with the programme to the section of the population under the age of 19 is 1:13,418.
