Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Prison Statistics.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

341 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the average number of persons in prison during the past 12 months; the number who have served their full sentence in the same period; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20554/98]

It is not possible to provide the precise information sought by the Deputy in the time available. However, as an indicator to current trends, the Deputy will be able to note from the table the number of persons in custody and those on temporary release on the first Wednesday of each month over the past 12 months. These figures are indicative of the average number in custody each day. I wish to draw the Deputy's attention to Questions Nos. 70 and 342 regarding the issue of temporary release.
