Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Private Transport Grant.

Michael Ring

Question:

428 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when a medical grant towards the cost of private transport will be approved for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo. [20403/98]

I am pleased to confirm that my Department has sanctioned a medical grant towards the cost of private transport arrangements in this case, with effect from September, 1998. The grant may be claimed at the end of each school year. Medical grants may be allowed where a pupil is severely medically handicapped, and cannot be accommodated on the ordinary network of school transport. The amount payable is based on the distance from the pupil's home to the nearest appropriate school. As the pupil in question resides 6.5 miles from the school, the maximum annual amount payable in this instance is £580.
