Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - European Convention on Human Rights.

John Gormley

Question:

51 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress, if any, made to date with regard to the incorporation into Irish law of the European Convention on Human Rights; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19941/98]

As the Deputy will be aware, arising from the agreement reached in the Northern Ireland multi-party negotiations, the Government is committed to taking steps to further strengthen the protection of human rights in this jurisdiction.

The question of the incorporation of the European Convention on Human Rights is being examined in my Department in that context and against the background of the report of the Constitution Review Group and the work of the All-Party Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution.
