Question:

166 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will give full details of the range of criteria agreed between representatives of management, teacher unions, parents and his Department in determining disadvantaged status; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20608/98]

Seán Haughey

Question:

167 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will confirm that a secondary school (details supplied) in Dublin 5 fulfils the criteria for disadvantaged status as stated in a letter dated 4 June 1997 by a former Minister of State to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 15; if he will confirm that the Taoiseach made written representations in this regard recently; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20609/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 166 and 167 together.

Traditionally, schools were selected for designation as disadvantaged by reference to a range of agreed socio-economic criteria. The factors taken into account included the incidence of unemployment; local authority housing occupancy; and medical card holding among the families of the pupils concerned.

Applicants for disadvantaged status were allocated points under each of the above headings and disadvantaged status was allocated on the basis of priority of need as reflected by points scored and within the limit of available resources. I can confirm that, while the school in question demonstrated a level of need under the above criteria, it did not score sufficiently highly in terms of priority of need to secure inclusion in the scheme.
I can also confirm that the Taoiseach, who recently made representations in relation to this matter, has been advised of the above situation.
