Vol. 495 No. 5

Written Answers. - Tourism Taxes.

Liz McManus

Question:

23 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation his view on the consequences for tourism development of suggestions of the imposition of local tourism taxes, including the suggested £1 levy on visitors to the Aran Islands. [20439/98]

Any proposals for local taxes that might be brought forward would be matters for consideration in the first instance by the Minister for the Environment and Local Government and for the Minister for Finance, and would have to be considered in the widest context, including the implications for tourism and use of any funds raised.

While I am aware of media and other coverage of Dublin Corporation's suggestion for a hotel tax in Dublin city, and of a possible visitor levy for the Aran Islands, I understand that no formal proposals have yet emerged or been submitted to the appropriate authorities.
