Vol. 495 No. 5

Written Answers. - Industrial Development.

Michael Finucane

Question:

71 Mr. Finucane asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment further to Parliamentary Question No. 174 of 28 January 1998 regarding closure of both the Neodata plants in Newcastle West, Kilmallock, County Limerick, the steps, if any, taken by the IDA to provide alternative industries; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20775/98]

The two properties in Kilmallock and Newcastle West which were owned by Neodata have both been sold.

The former Neodata plant in Kilmallock, now owned by a local community group, has been refurbished as a teleservice facility. IDA Ireland is actively seeking an alternative industry for the refurbished plant and, to date in 1998, it has had four site visits.

As mentioned in my January 1998 reply, an economic study group was established to evaluate the economic strengths and weaknesses of the town, including a breakdown of skills availability as agreed at my meeting with the local Kilmallock Community Group in November 1997.

The Kilmallock Economic Study Group is chaired by the Kilmallock Traders Association and comprises representatives from Limerick County Enterprise Board, SFADCo, Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland. This group has now appointed consultants to examine all socio-economic aspects of Kilmallock and its environment. The study, being conducted by the consultants, involves meetings with all interested parties in Kilmallock. A report is due from this group by the end of this month. The refurbishment of the former Neodata plant will enhance the attractiveness of the area as a location for investment.

The Newcastle West facility was sold to a local purchaser and will no longer be marketed by IDA Ireland. The agency continues to market West Limerick to potential overseas investors.
