Vol. 495 No. 6

Written Answers - Schools Liaison Programmes.

Richard Bruton

Question:

176 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that University College Cork was unable to hold an open day for prospective students and the innovative scheme of pairing new students with a specific member of the teaching staff is coming under severe strain; and the plans, if any, he has to allocate resources in order that these programmes can be assured. [20912/98]

My Department has made inquiries with the Higher Education Authority in relation to the matters raised by the Deputy and I understand that National University of Ireland, Cork has an extensive schools liaison programme involving open days for students and career guidance teachers. I further understand that the university has not cancelled its open day and will be convening such an event at a convenient time in the current academic year and that the Higher Education Authority is not aware of any difficulties associated with its innovative scheme of pairing new students with members of the teaching staff.
