Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - Nuclear Safety.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

77 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Public Enterprise her views on whether it is essential that she insists that safety audits be carried out in all British nuclear plants in view of the serious management breakdown at the Dounreay nuclear plant; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22666/98]

I refer the Deputy to my response to Questions Nos. 120 and 225 on 30 September 1998.

As stated in that response, I have not at this stage requested safety audits similar to the Dounreay audit to be carried out in respect of other UK nuclear plants.

The safety of the British nuclear industry is a matter of deep concern to this Government. It is, therefore, my intention to keep the question of safety audits under continuous review in conjunction with the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland and through the auspices of existing formal contacts between Irish and UK officials on nuclear safety matters.
