Vol. 496 No. 4

Written Answers. - Proposed Legislation.

John Browne

Question:

84 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Defence the position regarding the promised legislation in relation to the Civil Defence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22951/98]

In a letter to the Civil Defence Officers Association in July last I undertook to update legislation for Civil Defence to enable it more fully fulfil its defined roles. This is currently under examination. A consultative process in relation to Civil Defence is also being undertaken in the context of the White Paper on Defence of which Civil Defence is a part. This consultative process offers a unique opportunity to review the strategic objectives for the organisation. It is hoped to have the process completed in mid 1999.
