Vol. 496 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cereal Producers.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

112 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the measures, if any, he has taken at EU level to ensure the future for Irish cereal growers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23355/98]

The most important development affecting all sectors of agriculture, including cereal growers had been the presentation by the EU Commission of proposals for further reform of the Common Agricultural Policy under Agenda 2000. I have already made it clear, in discussions in Brussels, that cereal growers must receive full compensation for any reduction in support prices arising from these proposals. I will also be seeking chances to other elements of the proposals which threaten the incomes of cereal producers, including the proposals to abolish separate base areas for maize silage, and to defer payment date of arable area aid.
