Vol. 496 No. 6

Written Answers - Air Traffic Controllers.

Michael Noonan

Question:

141 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if persons employed as air traffic controllers at Shannon Airport, who were previously directly employed as air traffic controllers by her Department, have full security of tenure until 65 years of age regardless of any arrangement made between employers and unions for early retirement; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23782/98]

The conditions under which staff of the then Air Navigation Services Office of the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications, which included air traffic controllers, transferred to the Irish Aviation Authority on 1 January 1994 are set out in the Irish Aviation Authority Act, 1993.

Section 40 of the Act provides that the staff transferred on vesting day to the Authority would have no less beneficial conditions of service or of remuneration than the conditions to which they were subject to immediately before vesting day, save in accordance with a collective agreement negotiated with any recognised trade union or staff association concerned.
