Vol. 496 No. 6

Written Answers - Suicide Incidence.

Dan Neville

Question:

324 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children the rates of suicide for the first six months of 1998. [23902/98]

Data on mortality, published in the quarterly reports on vital statistics compiled by the Central Statistics Office, show that there were 188 male deaths and 52 female deaths from suicide during the first six months of 1998 producing annualised rates of 20.7 and 5.6 respectively per 100,000 population. These figures are provisional as they refer to deaths registered during January to June 1998 rather than deaths which actually occurred during that period.
