Vol. 496 No. 6

Written Answers - Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

John Bruton

Question:

330 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if a deadline or target date has been set for Government decisions in relation to domestic action on the issue covered in the consultancy study, Limitation and Reduction of Carbon Dioxide and other Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Ireland. [23464/98]

For the purposes of the preparation of a national strategy to meet Ireland's commitment under the Kyoto protocol, a consultancy study on the Limitation and Reduction of CO 2 and other Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Ireland was published in June 1998, as a basis for public consultation. On 28 October 1998, my Department and the Department of Public Enterprise held a discussion forum for interested bodies, organisations and individuals who made submissions in the study. The submissions made, and the wide-ranging discussion at the forum, will be utilised in the development of the national greenhouse gas abatement strategy. Work in this regard is proceeding as matter of priority, and a draft strategy will be finalised for Government approval at the earliest possible date.
