404 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science the primary schools in County Limerick with a remedial teaching service; the number of pupils involved; the schools which do not have remedial teachers; the numbers of pupils in these schools who do not have remedial teacher access; and if he will make a statement on the matter. A total of 19,997 pupils attending 125 primary schools in County Limerick have access to a remedial service. 1,431 pupils attending the remaining 21 primary schools in County Limerick do not, as yet, have access to a remedial teaching service.

My capacity to allocate additional remedial teacher posts in any given year is dependent on resource availability and the level of competing demand from other special needs areas.

I recently allocated 60 remedial teacher posts to national schools with effect from September 1998. There are now 1,302 remedial teacher posts in place in national schools.

I will continue to review needs in this area. In the event of additional remedial teacher posts becoming available for allocation, I can assure the Deputy that the needs of the schools in County Limerick will be fully considered.

The details of the 125 schools in County Limerick with a remedial service and the 21 primary schools without a remedial service follow.

435 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of primary schools in County Mayo to which remedial teachers have been appointed; and the number of schools which have applications for appointments and to which appointments have not been made. [23727/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 405 and 435 together.

I recently allocated 60 remedial and 26 resource teacher posts to national schools. These posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need. Of these posts, four remedial teaching posts were allocated to schools in County Mayo. No resource posts were allocated to County Mayo this year.

1,350 pupils attend the above schools. My Department does not keep details on an annual basis of the numbers of children attending school who are in need of a remedial teacher. However, the report of the special education review committee states that pupils are in need of remedial teaching if they perform at or below the tenth percentile on standardised literacy or numeracy tests.

My Department received 53 applications from schools in County Mayo for the services of a remedial teacher. All applications were considered when allocating posts last September and the successful applicants were selected on the basis of priority of need.

There are 1,302 remedial teacher posts and 104 resource teacher posts at primary level. There are 77 per cent of pupils attending national schools in County Mayo that have access to a remedial teacher service. Of the 188 national schools in County Mayo 116 have the services of a remedial teacher and 72 schools do not, as yet, have a service.
