Vol. 497 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cycle Facilities.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

74 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has received two articles from a person (details supplied) in relation to cycling; his views on these articles; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20828/98]

The articles concerned, which I have received contain interesting and useful suggestions for the purposes of the promotion of cycling as a sustainable mode of transport in urban areas.

In March 1998 my Department, in association with the Dublin Transportation Office, published a design manual for cycle facilities for urban areas. The manual comprises a comprehensive set of guidelines for the design and provision of cycle facilities and will be of assistance to local authorities in ensuring that such facilities are implemented to a uniform and high standard. In September 1998 I made regulations to give legal effect to certain of the new facilities proposed in the manual. I have arranged that the articles referred to will be made available to the Dublin Transportation Office and local authorities generally.
