Michael Noonan

Question:

362 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the shortage of teachers at Laurel Hill College, FCJ, Limerick, the consequent overcrowding of classes and the narrowing of the range of subjects available to students; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24907/98]

John McGuinness

Question:

378 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will consider a proposal from the ASTI to reduce the teacher-pupil ratio in secondary schools; and if he will substantially increase funding to this sector in the forthcoming budget. [24425/98]

Enda Kenny

Question:

383 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the extent of the difficulties caused by the existing pupil-teacher ratio in the Sacred Heart school, Westport, County Mayo, which has a current enrolment of 587 students, with a teacher panel of 38 teachers; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that this pupil-teacher ratio is worse than that which existed in 1972 and that this student enrolment causes overcrowding and lack of curriculum options; if he has received documentation to this effect on behalf of parents, teachers and management in the school; the proposals, if any, he has to improve the position; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24494/98]

Seán Haughey

Question:

385 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide extra teachers for secondary schools; the long-term plans, if any, there are in this regard; if he is committed to the phased reduction in the pupil-teacher ratio to allow schools provide the widest range of subjects possible; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24531/98]

John Browne

Question:

411 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the pupil-teacher ratio of 19 to 1 is worse than the ratio which applied 27 years ago when it was 15 to 1; if he will take into account the urgent need for provision in the forthcoming budget to deal with the problems which face secondary schools as a result; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24764/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 362, 378, 383, 385 and 411 together.

School authorities may apply for an increase in the approved teacher allocation to cater for particular circumstances. Applications of this nature are considered under the curricular appeal process and each case is considered on its merits.

Deputies will appreciate additional resources must be considered in light of overall fiscal policy. The PTR at both primary and second-level has declined this year and I expect this to continue.
