Vol. 497 No. 2

Written Answers - Early Childhood Education.

Richard Bruton

Question:

374 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has considered the budget submission from the IPPA, the early childhood organisation; the discussions, if any, he has had with the Department of Finance on its proposals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24355/98]

I am aware of the submission to which the Deputy refers.

The Deputy will be aware that earlier this year I hosted a National Forum for Early Childhood Education. My objective in holding the forum was to allow all groups with an interest in this area to put forward their views on how best to co-ordinate and support the future development of early childhood education services. The Irish Preschool Playgroups Association was one of the bodies which took part in the forum and put forward its views on future developments in this area.

The report on the outcome of the forum has now been published and is being considered as part of the preparation of a White Paper on Early Childhood Education. The question of discussions with the Department of Finance will be addressed in the context of actions proposed under the White Paper.
