The Deputy will appreciate that the intention of the fund is to provide a secure, multi-annual, funding platform for projects. This is enabling proper planning of projects and is not subject to the annual Estimates process.

Question:

377 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the private contribution to date to the technology investment fund. [24358/98]

No private contributions have been received to date to the Scientific and Technological Education (Investment) Fund. However, the Deputy will note that the fund has enabled institutions to raise significant private funding on foot of the State's commitment. In this, one of the key objectives of the fund is working very successfully. I expect that last week's announcement re research will add further to this. In this respect, I would direct the Deputy's attention to the response of the Chairperson of the Conference of Heads of Irish Universities.
