Vol. 497 No. 2
50 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs if he will report on the distribution of national lottery funds by his Department in the period since the formation of the Government. [24366/98]
National lottery funding is used in my Department to support the community development programme, islands development programme and a number of family resource centres under the family and community services resource centre programme. The community development programme was established in 1990 in recognition of the role of community development in tackling poverty and disadvantage. Details of the funding paid in 1997 under these programmes is set out in the following appendix. The total allocation for my Department in 1997 was £5.6 million.
Each of these programmes provides funding on a three year basis to projects participating in the programmes and payments are made on a quarterly basis and depend on the continued implementation of the agreed work plan and receipt of accounts and returns for payments previously issued. The total allocation for 1998 is £7.759 million. In line with previous years the final list of payments, once available, will be deposited in the Oireachtas Library early in the new year for the information of Members.
I might mention that applications for funding under the CDP are assessed by an independent technical group. The functions of the group also include assisting the Department in drawing up a list of 30 priority areas/communities of interest to be targeted for the development of new projects as provided for in Partnership 2000 agreement. This involves gathering statistical data and other relevant information on a regional basis to inform the recommendations to be made. The information gathering exercise is also being used to identify priority area for the family and community resource centre programme.
