Vol. 497 No. 2

Written Answers - Consumers' Association of Ireland.

David Stanton

Question:

69 Mr. Stanton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the relevant project that was to be undertaken by the Consumers Association of Ireland as referred to in Parliamentary Question No. 109 of 17 November 1998; the amount of financial support her Department was prepared to offer in order to assist the association; if this money is still available to assist the association; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24666/98]

Following my meeting with the Consumers' Association of Ireland on 21 May 1998 at which I indicated that my Department would be willing to look at ways in which the association could be assisted in 1998, in particular through support for a project to be undertaken by the CAI, my Department provided details to the association of the procedure whereby such a project might be funded. The CAI subsequently provided information to my Department on a range of possible areas for a project. My Department encouraged the association to explore the matter further and to revert to the Department with more details, including details of the costs involved. My Department wrote to the CAI in September reminding it of the offer that had been made. However, as I stated in my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 109, the CAI did not take up the offer.
