Vol. 497 No. 4

Written Answers - Criminal Assets Bureau.

Question:

148 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will seek to enhance the powers of the Criminal Assets Bureau; if he has conducted a review into the work of the bureau in tackling the proceeds of crime; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25204/98]

There is regular communication between the Criminal Assets Bureau and officials from my Department, concerning the legislation underpinning the work of the bureau. I am also informed by the Garda authorities that there has been ongoing communication between the Criminal Assets Bureau and officials from the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs, the Department of Finance and the Office of the Attorney General on the same matter. Arising from the ongoing review of the work of the bureau, I intend shortly to publish legislative proposals to amend the Proceeds of Crime Act, 1996, which is one of the principal pieces of legislation used by the bureau.
