Vol. 497 No. 4

Written Answers - Salmon Conservation.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

76 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the plans, if any, he has to review arrangements for the salmon fishing season for 1999. [25192/98]

A comprehensive review of salmon conservation measures for 1999 is under way in my Department, in consultation with the Central and Regional Fisheries Boards and the Marine Institute, in light of experience and trends this year and informed by scientific advice and stock assessment data. My decisions on the 1999 regime will be informed, in particular, by the continued need for reduced exploitation on the part of all involved in spring salmon fishing. The restoration of spring salmon stocks is a key conservation priority, as was confirmed by the seminar on spring salmon stocks last September.
