Vol. 497 No. 6

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

106 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of one teacher schools which received a second teacher in the school year 1998-9; and the number of one teacher schools with at least ten pupils which remain to receive the promised additional teachers. [25885/98]

For the 1998-9 school year, 67 schools are operating as two teacher units as a direct consequence of my supportive initiative for one teacher schools. There are 56 one teacher schools for the 1998-9 school year which have an enrolment of more than ten pupils. I will continue to examine a range of options with a view to identifying the most appropriate way to fulfil the Government's commitments to the remaining one teacher schools as outlined in An Action Programme for the Millennium. It is the Government's firm commitment to fully implement this promise within its term of office.
