Vol. 497 No. 6

Other Questions. - Schools Building Projects.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

37 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sanction capital funding for the required extension and sports hall to Scoil Mhuire community school, Clane, County Kildare, in view of the fact that planning permission for the project has been granted by Kildare County Council; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23384/98]

Architectural planning for the proposed extension to Scoil Mhuire, Clane is well advanced and the final stage, the bill of quantities, is due in my Department before the end of 1998. A physical education hall is being planned as part of the extension.

Planning permission for the project was only recently granted by Kildare County Council and was delayed due to a request for additional information by the council. When architectural planning has been completed, the question of inviting tenders will be considered.

I thank the Minister for his positive reply. My constituency colleague, who will be in the House soon with large amounts of money falling from his pockets, might give the Minister the few shillings required to allow the project to proceed immediately.

The Deputy's constituency colleague has been extremely generous to the capital programme for second level schools. It is now at about £60 million, compared to £33 million a mere 15 months ago. In that context, Deputy McCreevy is not only looking after Kildare but the rest of the country in terms of second level capital funding.
