Vol. 497 No. 6

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

55 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of additional guidance and remedial teachers which he is providing at second level in the school year 1998-9. [25884/98]

All schools in the free education system have an ex-quota allocation in respect of guidance. The allocation to individual schools for a particular school year is determined by the enrolment at the end of the preceding September.

The total ex-quota allocation in respect of guidance in the current school year is approximately 567 wholetime teacher equivalents. There are at present 350 ex-quota remedial posts allocated to second level schools. The posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need and having regard to the existing provision within schools.

The question of allocating additional ex-quota remedial or guidance posts to second level schools must be considered in the context of available resources.
